Owl and Birch Outstanding Wedding Theme won First Place

little spring garden print yumi yumi

When I spotted the adorable owl prints by etsy seller yumi yumi on Hostess with the Mostess yesterday, I knew these illustrations could be the inspirations for an amazing modern chic tablescape.

Wedding Table Design

I am not the only one who thinks so. Milestone Events of Vancouver used them as the basis for their tablescape booth at Wedding Fair 2009. And their booth won first place.

Their sophisticated tablescape exhibits a clever use of natural elements. I would love to sit at that table. Check their blog for more detailed pictures of their tabletop.

Buffet Tables Styled by Robyn Glaser

robin glaser's winterscape buffet table

Prop stylists create the mood of a picture. Looking at their creations give us clues on how to set up a stunning buffet table. I will feature the work of two prop stylists today.

First, I spot a Decking The Halls picture on Apartment #34. Although the Holiday season is almost over. The celebrations officially closed according to the French and Christian tradition at Epiphany. Depending on the family, Epiphany is celebrated January 6 while others celebrate it the first Sunday of January. For me, January 6 is the mark. Still, I will get us a galette des rois for tonight’s dinner. It is so delicious.

3 Iterations for an Housewarming Party Theme

housewarming party theme #1The migration of the birds inspires me to create an autumnal housewarming party theme. As I assembled my montages, I could not decide which one I like the best.

I composed three mood boards for the tabletop. They all reuse the same main components. I want to know which one you prefer? Before you post your vote, let me tell you about the components.

Main Components

My starting point were the two PopMat Paper Placemats by Publique Living. The Natural Kraft seems a better choice for a 100% recycled paper. It feels warmer than white. My idea is to alternate the Mailbox pattern and the Birdcage pattern as you set up your dining table.

The pop up graphics designed by Lian Ng double as a name card but I prefer it without any writing. I read on Hostess with the Mostess that Publique Living launched three new patterns in time for the Holidays: Reindeer, Fireplace and Banquet.

housewarming party theme #2

Serving tab water is more eco-friendly. Now you can get the look at the plastic water bottle in glass. Italian design house Seletti brings you these glass water bottles in 4 different designs.

Housewarming Gift Ideas

The Lovebirds Pillow by Ferm Living, the Nest Lumen by Adam Frank and the Areaware Bird Box designed by Fredrikson Stallard would make two luxurious gifts. Lumen is an oil lamp that can project a large shadow on the wall. The symbolic act of giving a bird house to someone who move into a new nest is cute.

If you are looking for a gift under $30, go for Rae Dunn’s Ceramic Birdhouses. It comes in 3 shapes, each with their own words. The models are names Home, Chirp, or Nest.

Tableware

housewarming party theme #3

I selected Mud Australia for in #1 and #3. Simply used a different pictures. I like the modern shape of the Mud Australia collection. And I adore the fact that they come in a dozen colors. I could color coordinate it with the and Jason Miller’s Seconds Dinner Plate Set.

I wished a splash of color so I used the adorable Royal Copenhagen Mega Pattern. The Blue Fluted MEGA‘s hand painted drawings are enlargements of a timeless design originally created in 1775. The royal blue nicely opposes the kraft paper placemat.

Finally, the Gold Tree Branch Place Card Holders finish the tablescape. If the color of your table do not match well with the theme, place a table cloth beneath the pop up placemats.

Cast your vote? Which board do you prefer between the three?

Flicker Oil Lamps by Duo Design from Holland

Flicker Oil Lamps by Duo Design from Holland

Founded in 1985 by Emiel Vaessen and Gert Jan Vogel, the design agency Duo  Design produced a unique line of interior products over the years. They introduced Flicker in 2008.

Flicker is a straw-like oil lamp sold in a set of 3 sticks. You deposit the stick inside a normal glass or ceramic vase. Jean of NOTCOT saw them at the Maison et Objet Fall 2008 show in Paris. Jean described them as metal straws with a wick inside which soaks up the oil.

Centerpiece Idea

Instead of the traditional candlestick, be creative with the way you lit your table when you entertain. You could use a brushed metal or a ceramic rectangular flower box that you fill with sand. Insert deeply the Flicker tubes so they feel securely in place. Cover the sand with black or white sesame seeds to finish it up.

I found a US online retailer that is temporary out of stock. Let’s hope they will be getting more Flicker sets pretty soon.

Gerbera Daisies Tablescape for Showers and Girl Birthdays

gerberadaisies_bridalteaparAfter the sunflower bridal shower, it is the turn of the even more popular and accessible gerbera daisy to be the center of attention.

I imagine this tablescape for a teen girl birthday party. The tablescape was designed by the team at Bellenza as a showcase for their party favors, place card holders and votive holders. The concept fits a Sunday family brunch, a lady lunch, a bridal or a baby shower.

Décor Tips

Wrapping your napkins with a ribbon and a fresh flower is easy. You must delay the execution until the last minute since you cannot hide a phial. The gerbera should be sturdy enough to support the lack of water. If you wish to preserve the flowers longer, put instead a low height bud vase at each place setting.

The fish bowl centerpiece produces great visual impact with a minimal effort. The materials are easy to find, even at a Walmart store. But be kind to wildlife and make sure to find a good home for the red fishes after the party.

Read Cause a Stir With Gerbera Daisies at a Bridal Shower Tea Party for more details of activities, menu and décor about a tea party theme.

I want to thank a reader, Dahlia, for directing me to the gerbera-inspired table scene from the Wedding Bistro. If you know great tips or inspiring Web places like that, do not hesitate to submit your tips. I am always on the hunt for more inspirations.

Two Bridal Showers | Real-Life Party

bridal shower party themes

Jaime of It’s a Jaime Thing sent me the pictures of two bridal showers she designed last year for a cousin and a best friend. They are lots of clues who can recycle for your own parties.

The Sunflower Sunshower

A hand-made tiki bar and lots of fresh sunflowers set the tone of this party. Her cousin, the groom to be, built the tiki hut for his father as a Father’s Day present. It is so cool to reuse his own creation for his bridal shower.

If you wish to host a tiki bar, check out ebay or your local kitsch stores to get your hands on a few tall tiki mugs. Get for the lucky couple a scorpion bowl for 2. These will make nice souvenirs to the couple.

The Blue and White Bridal Shower

Jaime did this tablescape for her very best friend. It was exciting for her. She did a great job working with a dual tone palette. The key is to create interest through layering, shines and textures.

When you spread glass nuggets and marbles along the table always remember to leave space for water jars, wine bottles and serving plates.

Working with clear dinnerware and flatware on a table emphasis what is the background. Take advantage of it when you have a beautiful pattern like those napkins. The clear flatware almost disappear which is a good idea in this instance.

Another option would have been to go with a sky blue flatware which would highlight the napkin pattern.

For a variation on this theme, you could use several tones of the main color. Because the party favors are silver, you could place a silver gray paper charger plate, a clear dinner plate and a blue salad plate underneath the heart.

Unusual Tabletop Accessories for Father’s Day or a Wedding Gift

ewetube vase :: buds dinnerware :: gemini wine aerator and decanter :: unusual table accessories

More and more men cook at home and organize parties. Obviously, they are looking for a different aesthetics. If your dad is one of those men, read this.

After the fact, the housewares list I gathered would also make perfect wedding gifts. Tell me what your think?

Flower Vases for Centerpieces

The first product is the Lichen’s new eweTUBE Felt vase made from 100% merino wool felt. This kit comes flat-packed, with two glass tubes. The eweTUBE vase looks great with easy to get flowers like spider mums and gerberas.

Grab a few vases. Be creative on how you display them on your table. Spread the bases sitting upright with one vase on each felt base; stack a few to create a long line. When the base rests on the side, the two tubes fit into a base.

Graphic Design Plates

I came to enjoy more and more patterned dining plates. I am getting bored with the all white dinnerware set. I can understand professional chefs who make elaborate food presentation for using them.

At home, most of us serve our food in a simpler manner. Patterned or illustrated plates look warmer and more charming. Two qualities naturally associated with at home entertaining. I encourage brides and brooms-to-be to think about that fact before making completing your wedding registry.

The Buds pattern designed by APM Design, shown here in honeydew, is available in 6 colors. This set would not be ready for Father’s Day since it is made for order. Allow 2 to 3 weeks for delivery.

Wine Tasting

The Gemini wine decanter features a unique dispenser which individuals use for pouring their glass of wine.It holds a whole 750 ml bottle of wine. I select it because it is a conversation piece.

Gemini acts as a wine aerator and decanter. Aeration enhances the taste of most young wines. Trust me, anyone can taste the difference, not just wine connoisseurs. If you do not like that model or want something less expensive, several types of wine aerators exist on the market.

Get inspired by the ISES in Wonderful Big Bash

ISES in Wonderful Big Bash photographed by Frances Marron Photography

These fabulous tablescapes were designed by a group of event planners for their association conference. They look too great that I could not resist showing you.

The party theme was Alice in Wonderland. The results are stunning.

My Favorite Elements

The inside of the huge drum shape fixture features drawings inspired by Alice in Wonderland. The Perfect Petal created these fantastic tabletops.

The cutlery planted on the gold tumbler glass adds an unconventional touch. The plates were gorgeous.

The metallic bird with the artificial rose is so pretty. Your guests feel important when every guest has its own flower. Doing it this way serves a double  and even a triple duty. If you do something like that, you could tell your guests that this is their party favor.

Dramatic Events designed the playful garden under the umbrellas. You could recycle this concept for a graduation party, a baby shower and a girl birthday party.

Serving a drink on a jar with the cute “Drink Me” tag qualifies as making a signature drink.

A Wedding Party Blog

I came across those fabulous pictures on Sparkliatti, a three-month old blog from event planner Sasha Souza from Napa, California. I discovered her blog through Twitter.

Frances Marron photographed the event. Check the ISES in Wonderland slideshow she made for more inspirations.

Centerpiece and Tabletop Ideas for Mother’s Day

mother's day centerpieces :: vazu ter off top expandable flower vase :: gerbera dill chrysanth :: tryflowers.org.uk

I was planning to showcase the actual Mother’s Day table I designed for my mom but due to my surgery, I will skip this year. I still can talk you about the design.

Mother’s Day Tabletop Ideas

My scheme revolves around my baroque black & white dinnerware set.

It is becoming a habit to use this dinnerware set for Mother’s Day. I composed a Girlie Mother’s Day inspiration board with the same set last year. This year, I decided to add vibrant pinks and greens to brighten up the black & white tableware.

A Portable Flower Vase

Recall Vazu from last year. It is the fun and innovative expandable flat flower vase.

The Tear Off Top is a more cheerful version with less packaging and all the advantages of the original. Since Vazu is designed to carry around cut flowers, a cute packaging has no real purpose most of the time. The Tear Off Top vase is half the price of the original.

Tear Off Top is available in 4 patterns in a choice of 3 colors each. Vazu USA kindly sent me three samples of Tear Off Top flower vases with cute pink and red hearts for my setting.

MushiMushi – Love Is All harmonizes the best with the design of my Mother’s Day tabletop. For an casual outdoor brunch or a teen birthday party, check out the EnFlor pattern. At this price, you can afford to spread many vases across the room.

Finishing Touch: the Flowers

A simple bunch of fuchsia gerberas looks great for any family event. Keep them long as much as possible; the idea is to see to create a well-defined section of green stems between the vase and the flowers. You can use a rectangular or an oval pinholder to perfectly align the gerberas. In the pink family, the Pink Purple Ranunculus Flower is a classic choice.

I prefer the fresh look of bright green flowers. I enjoy the Spider family and the Galiaro Green Chrysanthemum. Other choices include a handful of long lasting chincherinchee, dill, and button chrysanths.

For floral inspirations, I always check these two sites. The Flower Council of Holland and the Flowers & Plants Association both keep you up-to-date with floral design trends. The So simple. So try it is a wonderful initiative of the Flowers & Plants Association to demystify the art of floral arrangements.

A hip floral tabletop theme for a family brunch

easterflorals

You do not need a design that screams Easter to look festive. Since the typical pastel Easter decorations are not my style, I created a series of hip and fun Easter tabletops. I will be presenting two tabletops today in two separate posts.

What is great for you is that my Easter tables featured tableware items that you can reuse for any occasions. In fact, the design comes from the shapes and the patterns of things you need to eat, not from a bunch of superficial accessories. It is simple and beautiful.

The birth of a concept

Thinking outside the box allows you to find fresh concepts. I usually start by analyzing the key elements of the celebration. The idea is to approach an event design from a different perspective. Basically, I look at at the Easter brunch party this way:

  • Easter is a festive, family gathering that occurs in Spring
  • Hosting an Easter party means planning several activities for kids and a table where the children will feel comfortable
  • The egg and the bunny are the more popular symbols associated with Easter.

Let’s review my floral Easter table. Every since, I saw the beautiful Atelier Lzc Party Napkins at Rose and Radish, I wanted to use it. My jumping point was this cute Black Floral Salt & Pepper Set by Sagaform. I selected this inexpensive salt and pepper set for the egg shape. When I put the napkins with the salt and pepper set, I found my theme. The rest is a matter of creating harmony and a focal point.

The cocoon-shaped soup tureen, the ice cream bowls and blue condiment bowl exhibit fun and comfort. Two terms associated with family life. The ice cream bowl by Miriam Mirri is huge so prepare one bowl per family or couple. Adding a communal course to your meal goes with the spirit of Easter.

The story goes that Miriam Mirri designed the spoon as a heart so that you can eat ice cream from one side of the spoon without touching to the other side. I am not convinced but it is a cute marketing story.

Finishing touches

The Coral Dinnerware shows that you do not need to go neutral to look organic. The style would harmonize well with any time of food. You can put it on your every day table, use it for casual entertaining or reserve it for special-event dining occasions. The choice is yours.

The Coral series has only a 7-inch bowl and a 9-inch plate. To complete your place setting, pair the Coral dishes with solid color dinnerware either in black, red or white. I would use a blue tablecloth to highlight the dinnerware. You want the Coral dinnerware to be the focal point of the tabletop.

The illustration of the Poppi Art invite links everything together. It is the theme that is fun yet sophisticated. I presented it as an Easter tabletop but really this tabletop design is fit for any occasions.
