Terrariums as an Art Form

Gardens under glass are slowly making a comeback. There is something captivating about terrariums that everyone seems to enjoy. I like the fact that they fit even in small rooms.

One talented landscape artist who takes her terrariums very seriously is Paula Hayes. She started making terrariums in 2003. Her miniature gardens are very sophisticated. Paula Hayes mixes plants and crystal in her creations. Paula told in an interview with Dwell that she keeps in touch with the buyers of her terrariums for three months in order to train them on how to take care of the plants. Some of her terrariums are made in huge glass pots and are exhibited in art galleries.

For the rest of us

Since I do not really have a green thumb, I would feel uncomfortable under Paula Hayes’ supervision. Plus, I could only imagine her price tag. The New York Times introduced a few creative gardeners who sell their miniature gardens under glass. These creations are more approachable.

I particularly like the approach of Michelle Inciarrano and Katy Maslow who founded Twig Terrariums. They include miniature figurines and objects to their creations. You can buy their creations at the Brooklyn Flea in Fort Greene.

Another girl who does beautiful terrariums is Katie Goldman MacDonald. She sells her terrariums under the name Botany Factory. This San-Francisco resident opted for succulents as her plant materials. Her creations are more modern. Three stockists in San Francisco sell her terrariums.

Terrariums are a great way to bring some nature in your home year around, even if the place you are living in might not be a big one. I would think even in a small apartment easily a location be found where to place a small terrarium and it for sure will be a great accent to any kind of other decor in that room. I have a terrarium in my living room for I believe about 20 years now. I admit, it’s pretty big and it fills an otherwise empty and hard to decorate or use spot along a wall. Along the opposite of this wall I have placed an aquarium of the same size and in between a big lounger chair and a decorative end table. Now guess what my hubby’s favorite place in our living room is! 😉
But as your pictures show very well, so it does not even have to be a big terrarium to bring in some nature and to set some really nice accents to any room of your home. Even a smallest one will do a great job.
So thanks for posting this really nice and interesting article and also thanks for sharing the great pictures they will give people some good ideas about terrariums.
