balcon and benetier by Inga Sempe

The Balcon collection that French designer Inga Sempé created for Moustache was originally made in beech wood. A white ceramic version of the shelf to screw and the tidy to screw are amongst the few new items that Inga Sempé will present at Maison & Objets Paris 2013. The Balcon series is great to deposit small everyday objects or to hang next to your bath.

Winter White Dessert Party in Gatherings Magazine

If spring is all about colour, winter is a study in white. Or at least it should be. Thanks to mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine, for many of us this winter has been anything a white wonderland.

Looking for a little frosty inspiration? Check out the Winter 2012 issue of Gatherings magazine – the “white” issue. Gatherings is a newish digital magazine created by interior designer and blogger Heather Spriggs.

We fell for the Snowy Sweet Sensations white dessert party – with its refined palette of white, cream and cocoa-coloured neutrals, and pretty vintage touches, it’s sophisticated enough for a winter bridal shower or an evening with your most stylish girlfriends, and yet homey and kid-friendly enough for a relaxed Sunday afternoon gathering with family.

gatherings magazine hot chocolate marshmallow stir sticks

The creamy white serving pieces look glamorous next to glass-domed cake stands, and we love how simple mugs of hot chocolate get dressed up with the addition of beribboned marshmallow stir sticks. The display could have fallen flat with such a limited palette, but contributor and food stylist Jessie Senese smartly used dark chocolate brown for contrast and tone-on-tone textured food items – a cake with white chocolate shavings, powdered sugar donuts, white-chocolate dipped pretzels – to add visual interest to the display.

Other must-read sections in this issue include tips on how to pick the perfect white paint (it can be more challenging than you think) and a collection of yummy white winter side dishes.

Breakfast Train Express

breakfast express train fine china tableware

Add a whimsical touch to your breakfast with these fine bona china carriages with birch wheels. Thanks to hidden magnets linking the carriages, the entire train can be wheeled along. Kids and adults can be entertained while waiting for their bread to toast. The eggcup, toast rack and salt and pepper holder are sold separately.

I first spot when Design Milk featured the Breakfast Express last year after it was exhibited at Pulse London. Since then, it is now in production and available on the Web site of her creator, Reiko Kaneko.

Tableware for Thanksgiving at West Elm

Mary Matson thanksgiving tableware

Mary Matson thanksgiving tableware

Mary Matson, a Brooklyn-based graphic artist, collaborated with West Elm on a collection of playful plates and serving pieces for the Thanksgiving table. The salad plates, printed with wishbones, turkeys and fall harvest illustrations, are a simple way to add a festive look to your white existing dinnerware. I got the prices from their press kit. The items will start to appear both online and in stores this week.

To complete the modern farm look of your table, here are too items that you will be able to use every day of the year. You can fit rectangular European-style blocks of butter as well as slender stateside sticks in the Bell Butter Dish.

The bamboo tray lets you bring the sugar and cream in style. I like the style of this ensemble a lot. I would buy it for myself, if it was not that the shipping fees to Canada are almost the price of the item.

DIY Paper Flowers

Only if you tried to stop and smell them would you ever guess these flowers were anything but the real deal.

And while there’s certainly no shortage of DIY paper flower tutorials available, this bouquet is something truly special: the variations in paper, colours and flower shapes, plus the addition of faux fern leaves, make it look authentic.

The bouquet, and the coordinating stems in simple vases, are a wonderful option for brides on a budget, or sentimental ones who want to preserve memories of their special day.

And though carnations aren’t as popular a petal pick as, say, roses, there’s something ultra feminine about this ruffled version made from floral wire stems and twisted cupcake liners.

A Round-Up of 4th of July Party Free Printables

4th of July cupcake toppers

This post started when Emily Henning of Seaside Creative contacted me to submit her Fourth of July printable cupcake toppers and food tent cards. I particularly like that she played with the shades of blue and red.

4th of July drink parasols

I went on a hunt to find more party decor items that will go well with her look. I found them at Martha Stewart. The parasol drinks are superb. The set includes 5 patterns.

patriotic ice cream cone wrapper

Nicely wrap your ice cream cones in a patriotic cone wrapper. You could use the cones to serve nuts, popcorns, or if you select a thicker paper, french fries.

For party favors, you can either make the easy to do Flag Favors or the fabulous Rocket Favors. Both will delight your guests.

Vintage 4th of July dessert table

The 4th of July dessert table styled by Marcie of Celebrating the Moments is absolutely gorgeous. She decided to craft a theme around the WWII era. Her attention to details and her use of vintage props set the mood. This is how you create an ambiance.

Vintage US flag Cookies for the fourth of july

She asked her friend Marilyn of Whatever Whimsy to decorate fondant flag cookies and button cookies. I like how Marilyn was able to infuse a vintage feel to the flag cookies. Go see Marcie’s blog, there are plenty more photos.

Ceiling Mounted Ellipse Ethanol Fireplace by Decoflame

Decoflame ceiling mounted Ellipse fireplace

Decoflame ceiling mounted Ellipse fireplace

Ethanol biofuel fireplaces allow condo owners and urban homeowners to enjoy the warmth feeling of a fireplace in rooms where they cannot put a vent or a chimney.  And because of that, it provides more freedom and designers have taken full advantage to create stunning contemporary shapes.

One impressive design is Ellipse by Decoflame.  I love the ceiling mounted fireplace. When it stands on foot, Ellipse almost feels like a fresh take on The Jetsons style.

White Winter Wonderland Theme for the Holiday Season

white wonderland ball ornaments

For its elegance and use of transparency, Winter White Wonderland is my favorite Christmas trend this year. It feels modern, fresh and would subtlety blend into your home decor. Most of all, it is fairly easy to achieve a stunning look because you have access to a vast collection of ornaments and props.

white wonderland tree ornaments

To create dimensions, make sure to play with materials and textures. Think about decorating with silver dust, light golden tones, white milk glass, bona china, snow-frost effects, pearls, beads, mirrors, fake fur, etc… Use any materials that enable you to achieve a sense of icy cold opulence.

Variations on the Theme

white transparent christmas trend

I do not believe that your Christmas decorations should look the same year after year. From a budget viewpoint, you will be pleased to know that every piece of this design could be reused for many themes. As you can see in this vignette done for an entry hallway, you can mix ordinary household items with Christmas decorations and achieve a festive look.

It is simple to turn this theme around. The style could feel as modern, casual or traditional as you like. If you aim for a natural look, add moss, pines, twigs and rocks. Or make it nostalgic and display old skate ornaments, sleds, birds, knitted mitts and sweaters like I did last year for my own Christmas tree.

Not Just for White Interior Decor
