Etsy handmade goods are now at Indigo

lily and val Be Full Of Joy print

After West Elm and Hudson’s Bay, Indigo is the latest retailer in Canada that carries a small collection of Etsy handmade wares. It continues to show that consumers want less mass-produced objects in their life. I am glad to see that more and more chain retailers are willing to bring small makers and designers into their shop. Indigo selected a mix of home decor, tabletop and entertaining, and style items from Etsy wholesale program.

This initiative will make your gift giving easier. Personally, I put the Studiopatro tea towels and the Lily and Val chalkboard prints on my birthday’s wish list; which is next month. They fit nicely with the kitchen decor of the house we bought this week.

So, if you are in Toronto, drop by the Etsy pop-up store at Indigo’s Toronto Eaton Centre location. They opened April 1st, 2014. Otherwise, you can buy the Etsy at Indigo collection online.

Why I Returned My Nike+ Fuelband

not for that

Less than 10 days ago, you might recall that I was a proud owner. After wearing it for 6 days in a row and chatting with other owners, I stopped wearing it for 4 days. I did not miss it and it didn’t change my daily routine. Don’t get me wrong the Nike+ Fuelband is a great tech gadget. It works well. I enjoy it for what it does but it doesn’t do what I want. I returned it because it feels short of my expectation.

What I found out is that most happy owners like the Fuelband because it motivates them to walk more. I already walk a lot. I easily do 10,000 steps every day, often more. Continue Reading

Reading Glasses at Costco

ready to wear reading glasses

Until two years ago, I prided myself for not needing corrective glasses. After months of resisting to the fact, I had to come to the conclusion that I needed reading glasses. Even then, I was so not used to carrying reading glasses that I often asked strangers to read me the labels at the grocery store. I finally bought a second pair to always carry one pair in my purse.

My New Gadget: The Nike+ Fuelband

nike+ fuelband white ice

June 26th, 2013 Update: Before you buy yours, read first Why I returned my Fuelband

It has been a while since I had my eye on a Nike+ Fuelband. Yesterday, I took the plunge. The reason why I bought a Fuelband is to help be more active. Yes, I wish to look better in my bikini but my real motivation is to stay healthy. Following my toddler boy around helps me but I want to do more. For the past 6 months, I try, without success, to add a daily yoga session to my routine. Between my work schedule, the household tasks and making dinner, I don’t seem to find the time to squeeze a yoga break. I wish that by raising the bar of my Fuel goal, I would have no choice but to integrate yoga in my life. Continue Reading

Cookware on Sale at The Bay (last day)

cookware

cookware
sourcing: Lagostina Academy-Clad 5-ply stainless steel cookware set  | Jamie Oliver’s Stainless Steel Copper cookware set at The Bay

One thing that I never buy at regular price is cookware. I always wait for the Bay Days sales. Today is the last day!  You could grab two awesome cookware set under $300, which is more than half price. This is a sweet deal before the Holiday season. Both cookware sets can be used on gas, electric, ceramic and induction cook tops. It is important to cover the widest range of cook tops when you buy cookware that can last a lifetime.

Oven safe up to 500° F/260° C, Jamie Oliver’s Stainless Steel Copper cookware  features a base made of heavy gauge copper and aluminum core base encapsulated in stainless steel. This mix delivers superior heat distribution. I own an older model of the big frying pan that I use several times at week. A comfy addition, that I wish I had in mine, are the soft silicone inserts on the handles. This set is on sale at $238.

Another great choice is the Lagostina Academy-Clad 5-ply stainless steel cookware set on sale at $294. And if you need a roaster, there are several models at 30% off at The Bay until tonight.

Know that I didn’t test drive these particular models. Therefore, I can’t tell you which one is the best. If you are used to non-stick cookware, you will find these cookware pretty heavy but it is all worth it. One last thing, make sure to read How to Select a Cookware? before you buy.

Fashion Style Editors at the New Buyosphere

style guide what to wear on a rainy fall day

buyosphere

I want to share a project from my husband with you. Jerome is a co-founder and the CTO of Buyosphere, a social fashion advice community. Yesterday, they published the latest version of their site. They put a lot of work all summer to enhance what Buyosphere delivers to its users. If you have fashion questions about what to wear at a party, to go to work or look for the perfect rain boots, this is a great place where to start your search.

style guide what to wear on a rainy fall day

I am one of their style editors. My guides will be tailored to the multi-faceted life of women in their thirties. I started with a fashion guide to look great on a rainy day. It features some of my favorite raincoats and rain boots of the season.

If you are new to Buyosphere, here are some things that you need to know about the site.

My Style

When you sign in, you select what are your fashion styles. Do not worry, you can revise them at any time. They found out that matching friends and categories wasn’t sufficient when it came to finding the perfect outfit for you. So they did lots of research and found that there are basic style types that align with brands and people. Women have 20 styles to choose from (choose as many as you’d like!) and men have 18. Selecting your styles will vastly improve your recommendations and the content you see over time.

Style Guides

Produced and curated by Style Editors, the style guides are user generated editorial nods to the latest trends, fun themes and most enduring classics. If ever you needed solid fashion advice, these are for you. Follow me or any style editors that fit your style.

Fashion Advice

This is where you ask specific questions, like, “What shoes do I wear with a chartreuse dress?” or “What do I wear to a fall wedding with a vintage theme?” Products are more scannable, complete with Quick View and when you find something you love? Just click the heart. You can also pin, tweet and FB from every page.

I invite you to have a look at Buyosphere (and join the community). They did an amazing job with their redesign.

iPhone Cases by Artists at Society 6

iphone cases at society6

I needed a new iPhone case. My current has seen better days. I thought about getting a new one for a while. Then, my son broke it while he tried to remove it.

I want a case with a personality. For that reason, I eliminated the big-box stores and even the Apple store. I explored the selection at Treadless but none fit my style. I found what I was looking for at Society6, another print on-demand store that represents artists. The art collection at Society6 appeals more to my taste. I also found that their art collection is more diverse. You can spend lots of time exploring it. With filtering, it took me about 15 minutes to find the right one for me.

Here are some models that I like.

Aki iPhone case by Cynthia Decker | Paris je t’aime by Nika | Autumn Berries by Iris Lehnhardt $35 each

I hesitated between Voyage over Edinburg and Coffee. I finally ordered the Coffee case. When I look at the circles, it stimulates my imagination. Overall, the design feels more like me.

It costs $10 to ship to Canada one or two cases. When I saw that it would cost me $10 for delivery, I told my disappointment to my husband who replied “Let me check their selection, I need a new case too”. This is how I found out that it costs the same to ship two cases. He bought the Boba Fett: Bounty Hunter iPhone case by Chris Mason. I can’t wait to receive mine.

The Shops at Target is an innovative collaboration project with small boutiques that Target launched in May 2012. The program enables small business owners to sell a collection of products created for Target but at the image of their brand stand. That provides great exposure for the selected shop owners. For the fall 2012 edition, the four small businesses are Kirna Zabete, The Curiosity Shoppe, Odin New York and Patch NYC.

I adore The Curiosity Shoppe at Target collection. The dinnerware collection from this shop located in San Francisco’s Mission District is designed around an Americana road-trip. I imagine using them as a basis of an end of summer fun party or a kids birthday theme.

Turn your Instagram Pictures into Prints with DeepSquare Prints

Photo: DeepSquare Prints $25 for 4 assorted prints of your Instagram photos

Today, I am happy to report about a cool product for all Instagram fans. Today is a great day for the two founders of Static Pixels, Massimo Farina and Lawrence Tenuta, since they launched their first product: DeepSquare Prints. They saw a market with Instagram prints. Like they say on their Web site, it’s hip to be square.

What you get is a 5-inch square print of any of your Instagram pictures printed on recycled paper-based board. Each print has its own stand and wall mount. I imagine DeepSquare Prints to be used to make a love story wall at a wedding or to share memories at a milestone birthday. They are also an easy way to decorate your office with pictures that you speak to you.

You can order 4 five inch prints on rigid paper board for $25. Shipping is $5 across North America or $10 for international delivery. They are Forest Stewardship Council certified.

Their InstaOrder program enables you to order from your iPhone 4 prints of the photo you have just taken. This eases the process of giving actual prints to your friends and family. Visit Static Pixels for more details.

Wanted: Fyrkat Picnic Portable Gas Grill

fyrkat portable picnic gass grill by Bodum

fyrkat portable picnic gass grill by Bodum

Statistics show year after year that ecommerce is less popular in Canada than in the United States. While it is true that Canadian consumers buy less online I would say that it is not entirely their fault. Many times, I must shop in the United States because I can’t find a Canadian retailer that sells what I want. These are missed opportunities for Canadian online shops.

The latest item that I want to buy is the latest model of the Fyrkat Picnic Gas Grill by Bodum. I want a compact, portable gas grill for when my little family goes for picnic. I have always been a fan of the Fyrkat Picnic Grill but I never bought it since it was a charcoal BBQ. Now that Bodum have united the look with the functionality I need, I am ready to buy. Sadly, I am still unable to find a store located in Montreal or at a Canadian online shop that sells the Fyrkat Picnic Portable Gas Grill with Propane Regulator. Even though I prefer the green one, I could settle for a black one.

My Call for Help

If you know a Canadian shop that carries the gas grill version, give me the information. Otherwise, I would have no choice but to give my money to the Americans.
