If you throw an Halloween, Halloween party favor bags are a must. One option is to print, draw, stencil, stamp or embroider an illustration on a paper bag or a muslin bag. The other is to buy handmade bags. Either way, you will get something that stands out from the crowd.

halloween ghostly popcorn bags diy

Better Homes & Gardens teaches us how to transform a plain vellum bag into a ghostly popcorn or candy bag in 3 simple steps.  First, curve the top edge with scissors. Make the eyes by glueing two wiggle eyes to the front. For take-out bags, I would punch holes on both sides to close the bag with a tied bow.

The next DIY idea uses leftovers. You create your own spider treat bags by sewing pieces of paper grocery bags. For the spiders, Angela of Pillowhead Designs use felt, a black marker and googly eyes.

Garden Party: Make your Own Vegetable Bouquets

vegetable flowers

Photography by Rahel Weiss via Remodelista

Here are cool ways to decorate your table with produce that come straight from your fridge. Remember that you could use vegetables to decorate the next time that you don’t have time to stop by the floral shop before the arrival of your guests.

Blooming Vegetable Bouquets

The first idea by the UK queen of the homemade Sania Pell pairs a single flower or blooming stem (you could use one from your garden) with a carrot or a bunch of radish. This look works when you have vegetables with the leaf still attached to them. I like that it is unexpected and still refined. Get more inspirations from this casual tea gathering from Sania Pell featured at Remodelista.

Edible Centrepiece

Then, I turned to see what the queen of entertaining Martha Stewart had to propose. I like her twist on the crudité platter. Line the bottom of  a deep galvanized-metal planter or a ceramic planter with sprouts, and pour in enough water to moisten them. Keep similar vegetables together and vary the colors to create sections. This creates a stunning edible centrepiece.

Then, I spotted a DIY project from Lexy of The Proper Pinwheel on You are My fave. Lexy decorated seed planter pots with neon twines and turned them into festive party favors. She put jelly beans in hers but you could put tiny cherry tomatoes.

Personalized Favor Bags for a Kids Party

Bridgett Edwards founded Perideau Designs in 2009. She is a mom who designs beautiful personalized stationery and party supplies. I particularly like the cute silhouettes on her muslin favor bags. Kids love them to see their name of it. Other moms will appreciate that they can reuse the favor bags to carry crayons or small toys. They are available in pack of 6.

Beside her standard collection, you could get a custom made design to fit your party theme if you buy 30 bags. The little ants are so cute.

Home Made Cookie Stamp

If your baked goods rival the fare found in fancy sweet shops (and why wouldn’t they?), this cool kitchen tool may be just what you need to remind snackers your creations are the real home made deal.

The 2.75″ stamp is made with food-grade silicone and features a sturdy wooden handle made from sustainably harvested trees. It even comes with a special peanut butter cookie recipe, but the stamp would also work well for shortbread and sugar cookies.

Two DIY Party Projects

cookies in sewed glassine bags :: party favors

I saw those two DIY projects created by Jessica from Modern Moments. They are easy and would definitely make a statement. The best part is that these DIY projects can be adapted to fit many occasions.

First, take this idea from a first birthday’s party for a little boy. The mother sewed a cookie in a glassine bag for serving. It makes an awesome presentation and your guests can easily take home a few cookies at the end of the party.

For the same party, this mom made these single cupcake stands for roughly $1 each. It’s an idea I bookmarked for my next tea party.

Three Packaging Ideas for Your Valentine’s Treats

valentine treats packaging ideas :: as seen on Martha Stewart

If you are baking your own goods for Valentine’s Day to distribute to your loved ones, here are three ways to spruce up the packaging. They all come from the team of Martha Stewart.

First, I selected to showcase the glassine treat envelops sealed with a heart sticker. The  cookies on that picture looks amazing. Her modern twist on the heart-shaped box of chocolates involves candies that you store inside heart-shaped cookie cutters. GlerupRevere Packaging sells round clear candy boxes in pack of 10 or more . Simply remember to order a model without a divider or to make sure the divider is removable. Otherwise, you could use a tin box that you have at home.

Carnation Cones

I usually dislike carnations. But I have to admit that Martha Stewart Living craft editor Marcie McGoldrich impressed me with this easy to do DIY carnation cones.

You could either print your own pattern on heavyweight paper or buy a thick patterned paper at a local art & craft store to make your own cones. Secure the cone with double-sided tape. And do not forget to bind the stems with floral tape.

Food Gifts in a Jar

Holiday Panettone in a jar

You can’t really go wrong with an edible gift, especially if it’s homemade and thoughtfully packaged. Never unappreciated, food gifts are a great option for the “extra” people on your list – like the mailman, your child’s teacher or a kind neighbour – who tend to be overlooked until the last minute.

If you’re pressed for time or just can’t bare to bake another batch of cookies, opt for one of these foodie gifts that don’t require much time in the kitchen for you or the recipient. Each can be layered and presented inside a jar – just dress it up with the cooking instructions, a pretty ribbon and a holiday note to the recipient.

Holiday Panettone

Panettone is an Italian sweet bread flavoured with dried fruit. It’s typically enjoyed during the holidays, but with ready-to mix-ingredients your gift recipient can enjoy it anytime of year.

Hot Chocolate

Sunset magazine offers up four flavour variations on everyone’s favourite winter beverage, including classic, spicy, mocha and peppermint. Create single-size servings of each in small jars and package them as a set.

DIY Hot Cacao Chocolate Favors and S’mores Kits

hot cacao chocolate favors

These DIY party favors are ideal for a winter wedding, or to distribute at Thanksgiving or Christmas. They will please adults and kids. You could replace the tag on the Hot Cacao Chocolate Favors with place cards and write a tailored wish on the other side.

s'mores kit favors

Once you bought the supplies, all you need to do to assemble the favors and make you own tag. The s’mores kits designed by Jordan Ferney for Project Wedding is a little tricker because you need to bend the wire hangers. You can write in Holiday paper your s’mores kit favors. The idea is to nicely wrap the ingredients separately. The muslin bags add a nice touch.

Look for food-grade packaging. Garnish carries a nice selection. For the stamp, you can get a custom one at Impress, look at their Christmas/winter theme stamps. Paper Source is also a great spot for rubber stamps. I bought several on my last visit.

Thanksgiving Dessert Idea: Potted Pumpkin Pies

potted pumpkin pies by inchmark

potted pumpkin pies by inchmark

Pumpkin pie is a Thanksgiving staple. To ensure everyone gets their share of dessert, try this adorable idea from Brooke Reynolds of Inchmark (she is a former art director for Martha Stewart Kids magazine).

Bake pumpkin pies in a small glass canning jars, allow to cool and top with whipped cream. Not only does it take less time than baking a pie, the miniature potted pies could also be labeled with guest names and used as placecards on your Thanksgiving table. And if your guests are pressed for time, they’ll love taking their pie “to go” so they can enjoy it at home.
