Sublime Cork Flooring

sublime cork flooring

Cork is well known for its sound barrier and thermal properties. But I have to admit that I am not big of the typical look of cork flooring products. This might change with that one. It’s absolutely gorgeous. Sadly, I cannot provide you any information regarding where to buy it.

The Charm of Vintage Serveware for a Summer Party

vintage party decor :: wood soda cases :: buoys :: coca-cola cooler

Seeing this old Coca-Cola cooler last week at Finnegan’s market brought back childhood memories.  My parents owned a lot on a small lake 45 minutes from my home. Every nice Sunday during the summer, my parents, friends and family members used to meet there. We crossed the lake by swimming, played games of horseshoe and sat at night at the fire pit. It was fun!

A visit at the flea market can be the occasion to design a party decor. Think about ho you can integrate old items in an unexpected way. Here, the stylist at Pottery Barn decorate a pole with vintage buoys. I remembered seeing a few vintage wood soda crates stacked in a corner of my father’s business when I was young. I wish he had kept them. These crates can be used to bring the dishes in and out of the house or to gather bottles and glasses next to your buffet. This look calls for dishtowel napkins.

+ Found Soda Crate $15 USD
+ Dishtowel Stripe Napkins, Set of 6 on sale at $27 USD

A Sneak Preview of the Office and an Announcement

I own a company with my husband. For more than a decade, I worked as a user interface designer then, as a Web designer. I enjoyed it but it was time for me to do something else. That is when I started to be an event designer for social events, working mostly on milestone events.

During that time, I started blogging in French. And later on, I switched to an English speaking blog with At Home with Kim Vallee. I never looked back. I found what I was looking for.

Simplify My Life

Less than 2 months ago, we removed all the clutter inside our house. It was more than 10 years of accumulation. Now, we are doing the same at the office in a more drastic way. We are moving to smaller premises because we reoriented our business over the years and we need less space. I feel rejuvenating. Jerome, my husband, also says that its feels like a new start.

I let go of my private office. I am only there a few hours a month anyway since I prefer blogging from my home office. Instead I will share a desk in Jerome’s office. The office is smaller but will be cooler.

We will get advanced phone technology. I will even get a phone number for At Home with Kim Vallee that I will be able to access from home or the office. How cool is that! It is great to live with a geek that takes care of all the technical stuff.

Looking at the Women & Moms Blogs Movement

By the way, I will be launching another blog in a month or two. But do not worry, At Home with Kim Vallee stays my main focus.

The new blog will be called Women Shaping the Web ( The idea is to explore the dynamic universe of the women and mom blogs. I will be about what is happening and the cool innovations from a user point of view. I will also share tips on how to market and how to improve your blog.

Like I told you before, women and mom blogs are an exciting domain. I am proud to be a part of it. I strongly believe that we moved from a Male Internet to a Female Internet. The new blog will be an extension of the presentation I gave to PodCamp Montreal last September. I hope that you will follow me in Women Shaping the Web, since you are the ones that I think will be shaping the next Web.

In the main time, I give you a glimpse of the office in the middle of painting. It is in an old building, full of characters. I am happy about my choices of colors. I am looking at way to tone down the lights on the main room. I will ask the electricians to turn them upside, so the lights goes on the ceiling. If this is not enough, I am exploring the idea of making a screen with colored acrylic sheets.

Old Meets New in the Exotic Collages by Cartolina Cards

greeting cards, note cards, mini cards by cartolina cards

The owner and designer of Cartolina Cards, Fiona Richards sent me a wonderful set of card samples. These greeting cards invite us to a multicultural trip through the centuries that wraps up in a fresh, modern twist.

Ancient Meets Contemporary

You catch influences of ancient cultures, especially India in the work of this independent design studio from British Colombia, Canada.

Fiona Richards grew up in Scotland. Her grandparents were dealers in old world Indian textiles. She often visited her uncle who was an illustrator. So it is not surprising that Fiona Richards successfully interacts with vintage patterns and infuses them with a modern distinctive look.

A pattern is printed on the front and the back of the cards. Therefore, these cards feel luxurious. Whether you are looking for a Have a Beautiful Birthday card, to transmit a Bravo, to forward your Best Wishes, to send Many Thanks, to celebrate Love in Wedding Wishes, check out their one of a kind catalogue at selected retailers across Canada, United States and Australia.

Eco-friendly Cards

Better yet, these gorgeous and uniquely original cards are eco-friendly. They are printed on FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified recycled papers, printed with vegetable / soy based inks. Their printer was named Most Environmentally Friendly Printer in Canada at the 2006 and 2007 Environmental Printing Awards.

The retailer catalogue of Cartolina Cards that I received shows 58 models of greeting cards, 18 note cards and 37 mini cards. Note cards are sold in single or box of 8. Mini cards are sold individually or as a six pack.

3 blogs and a mood board – 2007.09.15 edition

purple area : design to inspire : The Kitchen Designer

This week’s spotlight is about modernized versions of rustic country charms. Fall is the best time of the year to visit antique shops. My mood board mixed antiques, modern style and a Scandinavian connection.

1 | Purple Area for Oväntade kombinationer

With Oväntade kombinationer, the Swedish blog Purple Area shows us a perfect example of the coexistence of old and new.

The rustic island table steals the stage of this modern kitchen. The white washed old wood floor adds characters. Finally, remark what look like a reclaimed wood butcher block on the left side of the picture. Mix it together with an all stainless steel kitchen and you got the recipe for an impressive kitchen decor.

2 | Design to inspire for Sightseeing with Susan

The kitchen designer and blogger Susan Serra just came back from a trip to Denmark. She took pictures for Design to inspire and a few bloggers while on vacation. Sightseeing with Susan displays the treasures at Fil de Fer, an antique shop in Copenhagen. Most of Fil de Fer’s inventory originated from France.

Old bottles are popular. If you can put your hand on beautiful old bottles, do not hesitate and grab them. Serve water, lemonade, ice tea and even punch in those. Vintage bottles will made a statement when you throw a party.

3 | The Kitchen Designer for Beautiful Kitchen Cabinetry – A Preview!

I was digging for a kitchen done with old craftsmanship qualities but produced today. After all, antiques are great but we do not always find what we need. Antique furniture can be unpractical for our lifestyle. That is why that most of times, people only accessorize with antiques.

The cliché What goes around, comes around certainly holds some truths. I found what I am looking for with Beautiful Kitchen Cabinetry – A Preview!. This post is a sneak preview of a new kitchen collection to be distributed by Susan Serra. I cannot wait to see the whole collection. In the meantime, you can read Susan’s blog, The Kitchen Designer for great advices and inspirations.

The rules of my weekly column: 3 blogs and a mood board

Each Saturday, I selected three blog posts. The challenge for me is that I must create a mood board with pictures that other bloggers have posted in the last 7 days. The mood board must stay true to the scope of my blog.
