Three Rustic, Organic Wedding Invitations

organic rustic custom made wedding invitation

It has been a while since I featured wedding invitations on the site. I feel inspired by these three. Wedding invitations are so much more fun than when I got married. I envy today’s brides for the vast amount of options that are available to them.

Designer Yvonne Pingue created for Ryan and Leslie a wedding invitation kit that incorporates their love of music and where the wedding celebrations would take place. I adore this tailored touches. If I had a nice, personnel wedding invitation like that, I might even frame it.

DIY wedding invitations are big. If you are willing to invest the time and money (since you may need equipment and some external help to implement your visions), you can produce extraordinary pieces. Christine and Ian used a laser cutting machine to make a pop-up forest that surrounds the headline message on their invites. The laser cut cover stock was then sewn to laser cut kraft paper for an impressive multidimensional effect. Great work!

Book Exchange Party by Reid Girls Handmade

If you’re the kind of person who has a hard time parting with books, you’ll love this idea spotted at Reid Girls Handmade: a book exchange party!

Naturally, all of the party elements are inspired by books – from the invites to the decor and even the favours. Guests received this charming invitation designed to look like library book card. Each guest brought a wrapped book and filled out a bookplate (which was included with the invitation) to write a note to the new owner of their book. Old book pages were used to create a garland and food labels featured quotes from famous novels and authors.

Speaking of food, what does one serve at a book exchange party? Exactly the type of food that makes you want to curl up under a blanket with a good book: homemade soup and grilled cheese sandwiches!

As a party favour, guests received handmade book journals and bookmarks made from pretty paper and scrapbooking materials, stuffed inside an appropriately named “book bag”.

Not only is this a party idea that works at any time of the year, it’s a great option for a “girlfriends” get together, an easy way to clean off your bookshelves and gain a new read all at the same time.

Hand Printing Techniques from Yellow Owl Workshop

Handprinted placecards for Thanskgiving or a fall dinner party

Custom designed paper goods like invitations are typically the first piece of an event puzzle. In addition to all the necessary details – like when and where – they also provide guests with the first taste of an event’s theme and formality. But, like most things custom, personalized printing often comes with a hefty price tag.

That’s why we loved this clever hand printing technique from Christine Schmidt, co-founder of the San Francisco-based design studio Yellow Owl Workshop.

Handprinting invitations for a fall or Thanksgiving dinner party

With just a few supplies, including a blender pen, transparency sheets and access to a color photocopier, it’s easy to create your own customized invitations. This project works for any type of event and is a great way to boost your Thanksgiving dinner or Holiday party theme.

You’ll find instructions on the process from Sunset magazine – plus templates for placecards, an invitation and wrapping paper featuring these lovely vintage-looking fruit and veggie graphics.

cartolina iphone app

I do not know if you heard but there is a new iPhone app by Cartolina Cards that is cool and useful. The app enables you to send short digital notes embellished by the beautiful drawings of graphic designer Fiona Richards. She called them cartogram.

You select one of the gorgeous designs, write a brief message and then, you are ready to email or text it to a friend. The interface is easy to use. The app automatically syncs with your phone calendar. The best part is that if you wrote down the important birthday dates in your calendar, you will be automatic reminded of an upcoming birthday.

I bought it on the first day it was released. It was late at night so I sent a cute note to my adorable husband. It’s $2.99 well spent. Congratulations Fiona!

Stamps are ideal to create unique invitations and place cards. Looking at the latest collection of Yellow Owl Workshop gave me the urge to host a BBQ with old-fashioned outdoor activities, to host a tea party with my girlfriends or if you are really romantic, you could invite the love of your life for a weekend in Paris or in the Big Apple.

Experiment by creating several scenes on regular sheets of paper cut the same size of your good paper. Buy a few extra of the good paper. You can complement the scene with your own drawing or a big text. I suggest that you buy several colors of ink to give you a chance to try different palette.

Birdie Birthday Party Theme for a Little Girl

Lorena Siminovich artwork for kids :: mushroom collage on wood and growth chart

Nicole’s little girl will be 2 years old shortly. She wrote to me because she is looking for inspirations for a birdie birthday theme. I often find that looking at art print for kids is an excellent starting point. I have to warn you that you will probably want to buy an art piece or two. On the other hand, if you do, your party decor will be transformed into a useful souvenir.

I love the illustrations made by Lorena Siminovich. Her style talks to me. It is playful yet sophisticated enough to appeal to the discerning parents. Another advantage to be inspired by art is that it gives you a color palette.

Be Crafty with the Bird Silhouette

Bird silhouette designs are relatively easy to find if you look at baby clothes, home accessories, handmade toys and invitations. The silhouette shape already carries a childish vibe. It is simple to make your own template and be crafty.

birdie birthday party design ideas

You can add a festive look for a 2 years old party through the use of pattern and colors. Look for beautiful pattern, like you see here on the Bird Baby Bib, to make your own birthday banner with fabric or paper.

Invitations and the Cake

birdie birthday party theme :: invites and cupcake toppers

A beautifully decorated cake is a must. Serving mini cupcakes at a kids’ birthday party is easier to serve then a big cake. And if you have left overs, it is quicker to give a cupcake away to your friends. From the sophisticated birds in the nest cupcakes from Martha Stewart to the do-it-yourself cupcake toppers on a stick, there are lots of options that look great.

For the invites, I like the simplicity of the Birthday Party Birdie Invitations from Vanessa Cavaco. She also make matching round stickers and favor tags. Vanessa has a good eye. She is the one who spotted the  lovely felt birdie cupcake toppers and the bib, both available on etsy.  Look at all her finds for the theme.

More Art Prints with Little Birds

Finally, I invite you to revisit my post on Birds in a Tree decor for a nursery. You could use the wall decals I showcased or be inspired by the stretched art pieces for kids.

I hope all these ideas will inspire you to create your own birdie birthday party theme. It is a fun theme to play it.

Stunning Wedding of Jodi and Jon at a Ski Resort

ski resort wedding :: jodi and jon wedding at sundance resort, utah

This ski wedding theme would have been so appropriate for my own wedding. You see, I got interested in my husband after I saw him going down a ski slope. I always found that excellent skiers are sexy. On top of it, he is bright, cute, fun and cultured. The perfect match for me! I had a wonderful wedding.

I am really impressed by the wedding of this outdoorsy couple. Jodi and Jon went for a superb winter wedding celebrations on a ski resort in Sundance, Utah. From the escort cards put on a birch branch to the UGG boots wore by the bride, every detail was carefully selected to bring fun and elegance to this outdoor theme.

The invitation suite was designed by the letterpress design studio Olive-Route. Besides the beautiful dark gray and burnt orange invite, Olivia of Olive-Route designed the off piste details (transportation and lodging), the other events card, and an RSVP postcard. A complimentary ski lift ticket was included in the package. Her design fits so well with the wedding theme.

After the ceremony, the couple put on their skis for a photo shoot on top of the mountain. I love it! The wedding favors kept the guests warm. Male guests were given flasks and female guests were given winter boots.

Jodi and Jon’s Sundance wedding was featured on Martha Stewart Weddings, where you can see more photos that will inspire you.

Ladybug First Birthday Party Theme

ladybug first birthday party mood board

Angel Brave of Because Life’s Eventful contacted me a few weeks ago because she needed help in figuring out details for the first birthday of her little girl. Angel decided on a ladybug theme and she aims for a refined look. A sophisticated ladybug theme is more challenging than it seems. Doing sophisticated giraffe, owl, bird, elephant, and even monkey is easier because many modern designers have embraced those animals.

The key with any theme is to think outside the box. So instead of just looking for items with a ladybug motif, I searched for dot pattern dinnerware, I worked not only with red and black but also with green and white. The green comes from the fact that ladybugs are often used by farmers to eat insect that could destroyed their crops. I taught about a summer garden even if the party is happening during winter.

You also need to be practical for a first birthday. Therefore, I selected acrylic tumblers to not worry about the little kids breaking a glass.

+ Invitations: Printable Little Ladybug Invitation – DIY by The TomKat Studio $14 USD on etsy – the party circles are sold separately
+ Adult Dinnerware: Circle Chic Pattern by Mikasa – Black dinnerware mixed with red serving ware $39.99 USD for 4-piece plate setting
+ Glassware: Green Gingham Acrylic Tumblers on sale at $9.98 for 12 – 6 tall, 6 short

Dessert table Collage

I added more colors for the dessert table. After all, it is a kid birthday. I am sad that I did not found who made the ladybug cake. I found that Alana Hodgson made a similar cake.  I like to splurge of a memorable cake and there are awesome cake maker these days.

+ Chocolate: John & Kira’s Ladybug & Chocolate Gift Tower $49.50 USD
+ Candy: Hammond’s Red Apple Cinnamon Lolli $14.95 USD for 4

As you can see, I elaborated a deconstructed ladybug by mixing modern patterns, colors and moods. Best of all, you will be able to reuse many items for other occasions. And if you need more inspirations, check out the Little Ladybug Birthday Party featured on the blog of The Tom Kat Studio.

Wedding Invitations with Modern Elegance

fall wedding invitation :: good old days collection by chewing the cud

I enjoy the new breed of wedding invitations that emerged over the last decade. They are less generic. Brides and grooms now have the chance to tailor their invites to their wedding celebrations. One wedding invitation studio that I like is Chewing The Cud.

Based in San Francisco, they offered a fully custom made service and a signature line that can be personalized with illustrations, motifs, ribbons, and embellishments.

Their signature invitations are suitable for any stylish event with a chic vintage flair. I can imagine using them for a big-0 birthday or an anniversary. All their invitations are letterpress printed on 100% cotton, tree free paper with soy based inks.

Two of my favorite collections for something else than a wedding are:

+ The Good Old Days would be good for a special event designed around local food or taking place in the countryside – starts at $1875 USD
+ Flourish Fête would be perfect for a milestone anniversary – starts at $2175 for 75 invitation kits

An invitation kit is the invitation card with its envelop, the RSVP card with the response envelop plus an additional card.
