DIY Dollhouse with Ikea Expedit

diy modern dollhouse ikea expedit

diy modern dollhouse ikea expedit

They may have fallen somewhat out of fashion, but dollhouses are one of those sweet vintage-y children’s toys that always look at home in a little girl’s room. Unfortunately, old-fashioned dollhouses tend to be large and, when kids outgrow them, a pain to store and even pass on to others.

We loved this easy DIY version spotted on the Dutch blog 101 Woonideeen, which uses a small Ikea Expedit unit and wallpaper to create a modern version that doesn’t sacrifice charm. Not only is the unit sized perfectly for play, you can customize the look to coordinate with the décor in your child’s room with a vibrant wallpaper, removable decals or even just a different shade of paint on the wall. Best of all, the unit easily returns to its original purpose as a bookshelf or storage unit once your wee one outgrows her dollhouse.

The full instructions are written in Dutch, but the project is so straightforward you probably won’t need them. As we posted this, I noticed that their Website doesn’t respond today. It is good that you couldn’t read the instructions anyway. Let’s hope that their site will be back soon.

Set the Table with Inspiration from Ikea

Who says the everyday can’t be artful? These images by Swedish still-life photographer Carl Kleiner caught our eye when we recognized a few iconic Ikea kitchen pieces in the compositions.

The photographer behind Ikea’s Homebaked is Best recipe book , Carl Kleiner is known for his minimialist, graphic approach, yet these photos have their share of charm too thanks to a few hidden faces in the table settings.

Not only will we be taking inspiration from these when its time to set the table for our next dinner party – at least when it comes to colour and pattern –, we’d also love to see the photos available as prints. They’d make a great option for colourful artwork in the kitchen.

What to Do this Weekend: The exhibitIKEA 2011 in Toronto

exhibitikea 2011

I attended the opening gala of the exhibitIKEA last Wednesday night. It showed IKEA under another eyes. It is inspiring to see how four renowned artists transformed everyday products and furniture. I truly enjoyed three installations out of the four that are presented.

Bruno Billio’s Chair Columns

ikea fabrics and cushions on a bench exhibitikea 2011

As you enter the gallery space, you will notice the chair columns. Bruno Billio stacked 400 black and white identical IKEA REIDAR chairs under a big mirror to create his piece. Honestly, I only care for that piece because it created zones for the party. The nice fabric of the cushions on the long bench caught more my eye.

David Dixon’s Dressing Room

David Dixon's IKEA-inspired collection

The dresses created by fashion designer David Dixon were my favorite part. It is not surprising that he designs everything around a large dressing room.

Dixon really demonstrates that, with a proper eye, you can take mass-market fabrics and produce a refined product. Like he does for his own collections, he selected a color palette for his installation. I never thought that they were as many fabulous grey and white fabrics at IKEA.

It is also a nice lesson on how to match patterns to create an individual look. I might steal his fabric choices for a chair that I wish to reupholster with several fabrics. Grey and white is the palette of my living room.

George Whiteside’s Still Life Photos

Influenced by the work of Italian painter Giorgio Morandi, he layered vintage papers as his background and created soothing combinations with IKEA vases, pots and objects.

His photographs were all framed in white IKEA ODBY frames.

Thrush Holmes Shack

Holmes built the outside with the nondescript IKEA flat boxes. The graffiti style exterior contrasts with the refined interior. He staged a cozy guy bedroom, that does not scream IKEA.

There is still time to see it in person. exhibitIKEA is open to the public today until from 10am to 6pm and on Sunday,  August 21 from 12 to 6pm. It is located at 363 King Street West, Toronto.

Disclaimer: I was invited by IKEA, who paid for my flight from Montreal to Toronto and my hotel. Besides showing up at the media event, they asked nothing else from me. I wrote about the exhibit because I think that it is worth a visit.

Ideas for A Small Craft Space

craft station

craft station

When I designed the new floor plan for our home, I made sure to allocate a small part of the den (that we use as a library) to become a craft station. It is a small space. I have 57 inches of wall to play with. After looking at many possible configurations, I am leaning for a single desk with storage and top shelves.

Since I do not wish to spend a lot of  money to furnish it, I browsed the IKEA catalogue in search of the prefect desk for my space. My craft space will be located just beside the nursery door, in an open space. Therefore, having closed storage is essential. I also want something cheerful that will stimulate my creativity. I think that I found a good solution with the MICKE work station.

The things I like about it:

  • the adjustable shelf inside the storage compartment. It is designed for a computer tower but I could configure it to suit my need;
  • I won’t have to make many holes on my wall with the storage unit equipped with a magnetic writing board and shelves;
  • it comes in orange

Another option would be to take the small MICKE desk workstation and place the drawer unit on casters next to it to expand the work surface. I will wait until I see it in person to make a decision.

I am looking for a way to have easy access to wrapping ribbons and my growing Japanese washi tape collection. One solution could be to hang two GRUNDTAL rails.

Inspired by a Creative Kids Corner

Have a look at the superb craft corner that Belinda Graham of The Happy Home designed for her two kids. I love it! She put to good use the  GRUNDTAL rail. And I am impressed by the way she transformed the basic LÄTT table and chairs from IKEA with simply black paint and several washi tapes.

More Melamine Dinnerware for Outdoor Dining

ikea fargrik trolsk bowls and plates

I can believed that I bought more melamine dinnerware for outdoor dining. When I saw the Färgrik Trolsk bowls, I could not resist because they pair well with my Crate & Barrel rice bowls. I resist buying the plates but I bought the red Trolsk serving bowl because it can come handy to serve nachos or grilled vegetables.

I Miss the Yellow Hemnes Linen Cabinet

This is how the inside of a clear glass linen cabinet should look like. I adore all hues of sunny yellow. This is why I am sad that IKEA changed the color of the Hemnes linen chests. They selected a nice hue of red, but I would have liked it had they kept the beautiful yellow that they carried in 2008. They kept the same yellow stripes paper on the back.

If you are looking for a more neutral option, check the EDLAND if you live in the United States. Frankly, I cannot justify the Canadian price. I wonder if there is a mistake online in one of the sites.

DIY Ikea Bedside Chair

The summer cottage season is almost here. It’s time to prepare. I found an inexpensive way to add extra seating at the cottage and furnish the bedrooms on Design*Sponge. This afternoon DIY project converts a chair into a bedside table. The Ikea hack involves adding a drawer and a holder for a swivel lamp. Good job Kate!

It cost Kate Pruitt $51 in materials and took 2 to 3 hours to build. You will find the instructions of how to make your own on Design*Sponge.

Tips for a Neat Dressing Room

stylish dressing room with a neat dream closet by ikea

I was looking for an image to illustrate the happiness of living in a neat, well-organized space when I saw this ad from IKEA. Having a stylish dressing room is the ultimate way to start your day or to change your clothes after a day at work for a night event.

How to Keep it Neat

But having a storage system is only part of the equation. You also need the discipline to edit your what is in your wardrobe every season. If you keep accumulated clothes, shoes and bags, it will not stay neat. The biggest problem people have is to figure out to depart from their designer label clothes.

For the best clothes that does not fit you or for items that you simply never wear, why not organize a cocktail party at home where you invite your girlfriends and their circle to a home sale. Create a photo album on Facebook to advertise what you have to sell and manage the invitations. Gabrielle Chalifoux introduced me to, a french-speaking site that allows their members to sell the best items on their closet. It was successful for her.

To help you from impulsive buying, remember the old method that dictates that for every piece that goes in, you must remove one item from your closet.

By the way, the IKEA Storage event is ending February 14th. You could save 20% on PAX wardrobes and KOMPLEMENT interiors.

Entertaining Essentials at IKEA

casually modern tabletop for a fondue meal at ikea

The easier road for stress-free entertaining is to equip yourself with versatile tableware. Casual chic tabletop is what most people are aiming for these days. After all, you celebrate amongst close friends and family. As I shopped at IKEA yesterday, I took pictures of tableware that delivers that spirit. I spotted affordable tableware that you will be able to use over and over.

The first thing that caught my eyes was this tabletop set for a fondue meal. Blue is popular at IKEA this season. I would serve water in turquoise patterned SNÄLL narrow tall glasses for a change. And you do not have to invest in RIEDEL wine glasses with the SKIR glasses. It definitely not the same quality but you get the look.

ikea dinera collection

Then, I pay attention to the Dinera collection. Guys will love the blue-grey and the brown colors. I like the fact that plates come in many formats. You could mix colors or mix all solids with the ones with a white interior. I am partial to tableware with a white interior because typically food looks more appetizing against a white backdrop.

ikea small charmol bowls and pokal glasses

For entertaining, I keep a stack of tiny bowls for individual serving or to serve sauces. Believe me, they can transform a table. I bought a pack of small POKAL glasses for serving affogato. The POKAL  glasses are suitable for hot and cold liquids. You could get two sets: one to drink espresso and the other ones to serve your dessert. Keep in mind that the grey Dinera espresso cups and saucers (second picture) will look better, if you are willing to spend more.

If you are curious, I bought the small and the tall POKAL glasses, the big VÄNLIG glasses plus a few Christmas decorations and napkins.

+ SNÄLL glasses $6.99 CAD for 6
+ SKIR glasses $6.99 CAD for 2
+ DINERA 18-piece dinnerware set $29.99 CAD
+ CHARMÖR small bowls $3.99 CAD for 2
+ POKAL glasses $4.99 CAD for 4
