<p>At this time of the year, Montreal hosts one big cultural night all across the city. Yesterday night event was as popular as ever. The event closed between 2 and 3 am. Last year, I walked for hours the underground exhibit with a few friends.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-15969" title="nuit blanche 2010 overall view of place des festivals" src="http://athome.kimvallee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/nuitblanche_overall.jpg" alt="nuit blanche 2010 overall view of place des festivals" width="581" height="444" /></p>
<p>This year, we had other plans during the evening. Since it finished late, we stopped at the art gallery of our friend <a href="http://bettinaforget.com/InsideTheStudio/?p=559" target="_blank">Bettina Forget</a> to see her Change vs. Forever exhibit. Then, we walked to the Place des Festivals. The place was transformed so that people can dance, create, imagine and immerse themselves in a visual and auditory experience.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-15971" title="nuit blanche 2010 :: acting a scene from the prisoner" src="http://athome.kimvallee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/nuitblanche_theprisoner.jpg" alt="nuit blanche 2010 :: acting a scene from the prisoner" width="581" height="444" /></p>
<p>My husband and I had fun playing with the exhibits. My husband did his version of scenes from the Prisoner TV series. The sphere garden was gorgeous. It changed colors.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-15972" title="interactive image table at nuit blanche in montreal" src="http://athome.kimvallee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/nuitblanche_interactive.jpg" alt="interactive image table at nuit blanche in montreal" width="581" height="444" /></p>
<p>There were a series of interactive exhibits that we did not try. On one installation, you change the image by moving your hands. There was also a drawing screen on a building facade. People had fun doing it.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-15973" title="drawing screen at nuit blanche in montreal" src="http://athome.kimvallee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/nuitblanche_interactivedraw.jpg" alt="drawing screen at nuit blanche in montreal" width="581" height="444" /></p>
<p>Finally, lights were displayed all over the surrounding buildings.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-15974" title="multimedia art and lights on buildings at nuit blanche" src="http://athome.kimvallee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/nuitblanche_artonbuilding.jpg" alt="multimedia art and lights on buildings at nuit blanche" width="581" height="444" /></p>

<p>One element that I like is how the belts allow to customize the vessels with food decoration. The containers and vessels made from ingredients such as flour, coffee, cocoa and spinach, mixed together with salt, shellac and spices to make the objects durable.</p>

			<br style='clear: both;' />
		</div>

<p><a href="http://www.parkingday.org/" target="_blank">PARK(ing) Day</a> is an annual, one-day global event where artists, activists and citizens collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spots into public parks or installations.</p>
<p>The idea started in 2005 when REBAR, a San Francisco art and design studio, challenges people to rethink the way streets are used. They wish to reinforce the need for broad-based changes to urban infrastructure.</p>
<p>As someone who walks everywhere I can instead of taking my car, I share their feeling. Urban planners and developers should put priority on pedestrians and imagine cities where we can walk more instead of driving. Walking is good for your mind and your body. You feel more relaxed when you walk than when you drive in traffic.</p>
<h4>Popularity of PARK(ing) Day</h4>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-10947" title="PARK(ing) day :: installations done in previous editions" src="http://athome.kimvallee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/parkingday_previouseditions.jpg" alt="PARK(ing) day :: installations done in previous editions" width="581" height="663" /></p>
<p>PARK(ing) Day happened in several cities across the globe. In 2008, 500 PARK installations were done in 100 cities spread in 4 continents. People created picnic places, meeting places, gardening exhibits, kid pool areas, temporary library up to a free health clinic.</p>
<p>All installations must be a non-commercial plus the organizers of every local event must respect a set of rules. If you see the above poster Friday, you will know what it stands for.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-10948" title="park(ing) day poster" src="http://athome.kimvallee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/parkingday_poster.jpg" alt="park(ing) day poster" width="300" height="464" /></p>
<h4>Transforming a PARK(ing) spot for a day is not risk-free</h4>
<p>Organizing an event like that can be tricky due to parking laws. It is best to obtain a permit from the city first if you wish to participate. Read <a href="http://www.thestar.com/article/502864" target="_blank">what happened last year</a> when a Forest Hill gallery put Muskoka chairs on a grassy floor and serve free lemonade on a parking spot on Spadina Street, Toronto.</p>

<p>Two Amsterdam artists, <a href="http://www.theowatson.com/site_docs/work.php?id=41" target="_blank">Theodore Watson</a> and Emily Gobeille of <a href="http://zanyparade.com/v8/about.php" target="_blank">Zara Parade</a> created Funky Forest in 2007. This is an interactive ecosystem where children used their body movements to influence the life of a forest and a river.</p>
<p>Kids can use their body or place pillow rocks and logs to divert the water flowing from the waterfall to the trees to keep them alive. It is playful and instructive since if the trees lack water, they would wither and die. Kids could press their bodies against the forest to build new trees. The shape of the tree will be influenced by the child body. When the eco-system flourishes, the kids are rewarded by the emergence of lovely flying creatures. I wish I could play!</p>
<p>Besides the artist value, I wish to talk about this since I see it as the future of kid parties. Imagine booking a venue with similar installation as a playroom. It would be awesome. See how much kids enjoyed the Funky Forest on this video:<br />
