You recalled the fabulous mobile birds created by Spool Sewing that I showcased last March. I just realized that they would look awesome next to the Season Surface Graphics by notNeutral. Made of removable and reusable vinyl, the Season wall decals can stay with your kid up to the preschool years.
Build you own tree or small forest with the tree trunk parts, leaves, flowers, birds and butterflies of the Season Surface Graphics set. If you wish to create a complete natural backdrop, you could save some money by getting the Seasons & Elements package from notNeutral. That package joins the tree, air and land wall decal sets.
You could also match the mobile birds with art pieces. The San Diego studio Oopsy daisy specializes in fine art for kids. They print on canvas adorable and modern illustrations by many artists from around the world. “Birds in a tree” is a common theme. Let the color and pattern of the wall art piece influence the fabrics you will use to create your mobile birds.
The bird mobile is a fairly easy hand-sewing project. Making these birdies takes is 2 pieces of fabric, a needle and thread. Think of a modern quilt and mix fabrics. You will find the instructions on the blog of Spool Sewing.

Modern parents have more stylish and unique choices at reasonable prices. One brand that needs of style-conscious parents is Olli & Lime from England. Do not worry, several retailers in Canada and the United States carry the line.
Olli & Lime’s Fall 2009 collection is spread over 3 patterns: George, Billie and Egg. I prefer George (above) and Billie (below). Each collection proposes the baby gears, baby and toddler bedding and art prints.
If you have a baby shower coming soon, you could find adorable bib and burp sets, changing mats, sleepsacks and hooded towels that the parents will be proud to show off when they have visitors. I know that I will keep them in mind.
On my next collage, I mixed the Little George wall art with bedding and accessories from the Egg collection. Like I told you before, you do not have to stick to a single collection. These collections are less matching than what we used to see and still see at many department stores. Use them as a basis on which you built your own look. Ask your girl friends for advice if you are unsure on how to add your own touch.
A Collection to Grow With
They are adding new items which means that you can extend the decor as your baby becomes a toddler. This Fall, they added a new sheet collection with a fabric that contrasts with the quilt. You can recycle the drawstring bags as a toy bag.

Any home decor starts with an inspiration, a pattern or an item on which you develop your concept. To avoid the obvious theme, why not shop at Etsy to find unique cushions that will become the building blocks of your nursery decor?
These four cushions are naive to suit a baby environment, yet they are sophisticated.
+ The 50s Birdcage Pillow by Olive ($19) is unisex. Its provides lots of color choices. You could look for the same vibe for art prints. Remember the bird mobile designed by spool that I featured last Spring. It would be an awesome idea with these cushions.
+ You could aim for the simple shapes of the Kreuzberg pillow by hazelandhunter ($42). As you can see it is possible to mix geometric and organic forms if they have the treatment.
+ Une Voiture en France Cushion tells the story of a weekend camping trip with a tent, a couple and a car. It is cute. By Helena Carrington. $66
+ Joom made the Yellow on Off White Blooming Blossom Rectangle Pillow ($28) in several colors. I like this yellow as an accent color. You could add trees and birds wall decals to continue the theme.
If your little girl is into Barbie, know that Pottery Barn Kids is launching an exclusive collection of bedding and room decor inspired by the famous doll. When you go for an obvious theme like that, I advice you not to buy the entire collection. This way, the result will look more sophisticated and more original.
The Art of Mixing, not Matching
Select the one or two items you like the most and build around your decor around it. Say that you go for the prints, you can display a few barbies on a shelf and then, opt for a pink stripe bedding. Soft greens and yellows goes well with pink. They produced a more refined look than pink walls.
Pottery Barn Kids have many beautiful bed covers and sheets in the pink family. See how the Emily Quilted Bedding mixed floral embroideries with plaid pattern sheets.
There is also an economic reason to do so. Since kids get fairly quickly tired of a theme, you would not have to replace everything to update the look.
Barbie Dream Room In-store Parties
Pottery Barn Kids stores nationwide will host Barbie Dream Room Workshops September 12-13, 2009 with craft sessions where little girls can design their own dream room.
There is also a sweepstakes with a $5,000 gift card from Pottery Barn Kids as the grand prize. Second prizes include a Barbie Three-Story Dream Townhouse and Barbie Fashionistas dolls. To enter and for official rules, visit www.potterybarnkids.com/Barbie between Aug. 27 and Sept. 24.

You may be familiar with the letters and alphabet prints by Binth. They have been around since 2007, I think. What I did know what that you can go for single letter print instead of the entire alphabet. It is a cheaper option. Any one of those will look great in a nursery or a kids playroom.
By using a deep frame, the single alphabet art print can be placed on a desk or a bookcase instead of hanging it on the wall. You can write a small word with the 5 x5 inch frame boxes.
+ Binth Alphabet Poster $80 unframed, $180 framed
+ Binth Numbers Poster $55 unframed, $90 framed
+ Single Alphabet Framed Print $28 USD
You already know that I have a thing for alphabet art prints for a nursery, a kid bedroom or a playroom. The modern style of Jenn Ski drawings are appealing. They are whimsical without looking childish.
The giclée prints are made available on archival quality, 100% cotton rag, acid-free paper, and are printed using UV-stable pigment inks. Each piece is treated as art. The print are and numbered by the artist plus the piece comes with a certificate of authenticity. They are made to fit standard photo frames. New parents will be thrilled to receive any of these at a baby shower.
If you are looking for the most elegant option, order through Jenn Ski web site. She sells her 4″ x 6″ with museum-grade 8″ x 10″ backing and mat for $29 USD. Frames are not included. Otherwise, she sells the prints without the mat on etsy.

Designed for children of all ages, these wooden airplanes are almost too exquisite to be a toy. The shadows of their silhouette create a Wow factor when you gather them to form a mobile in a nursery or a toddler room.
These wooden planes were designed by Ole Sondergaard for the Normann Copenhagen brand. The shape conveys the simple elegance of Danish design. I love it!
+ Normann Copenhagen Plane small (plane 1) $45, med (plane 2) $60, large (plane 3) $115 at Velocity Art and Design
+ Normann Copenhagen Wooden Planes small £30, med £42, large £75 at Panik-Design
Since I went to a baby shower last Saturday, designing a nursery inspired me to write this post. I am into modern cribs. Since modern cribs tend more expensive than the traditional cribs at Pottery Barn Kids, why not go for convertible cribs or cribs that serve two duties? It is more eco-friendly to extend the life of the baby furniture.
+ The Casa Kids Ola crib is supposed to be the only crib sold today that converts to both a Toddler bed and a Twin bed. At $899, the starter crib compares with wood cribs at other stores. The cribs component will be reused later. The side rails will become the headboard and footboard of the Ola Twin Bed.
+ The AJ crib by ducduc comes with a bookcase attached to one side. For an extra $45, you can add doors to convert the bookcase in an armoire. Kids clothes and other baby accessories should fit well inside. It comes in 10 finishes. The AJ crib starts at $1450 USD
The Alex crib with an optional applique word on the side starts at $950 USD.
+ For space savings, the Studio crib designed by Truck Product Architecture for Nurseryworks provides a hideaway-changing table with closed storage on the side of the crib. This pricier modern crib also converts to a toddler daybed and built-in desk. $2095 CAD at ModernKid | $2100 USD at Modern Nursery
Note that the Nurseryworks Sleepytime Rocker in Velvet is on sale at $450 (50% off) at Modern Nursery. Available in several fabric colors and wood types.
These pictures illustrate perfectly how richly patterned flag banners bring a festive look to a simple playground. There are a must for kids birthday parties. 24 cotton pennants in 12 designs compose each banner. The banners are hand made in Netherlands.
I found those at ROMP, a kid store born in Brooklyn that now resides on Hudson Valley. ROMP is the brainchild of a designer and mom called Jenn Labelle. Her store is filled with amazing toys, playroom accessories and kids room décor.
From the latest collection, the I Robot I Help coat hangers are awesome. Kids will love those. They come complete with screws/eyes. Email them to know the next delivery dates because they are marked out of stock.
+ Flag Banners $30 USD
+ I Robot I Help hook / coat hanger large $50, mini $22 USD
A way to personalize the décor is to turn your digital photos of a child, pet, or object into vinyl silhouette decals. Several profiles are available: head profile, half-body, full body, pet and objects.
Do not think of silhouette decals only for home decor. Vinyl silhouettes are an easy and affordable way to personalize a birthday party decor with characteristics of the guest of honor.
The silhouette has removable adhesive. Normally it peels off without trouble but be aware that this is not guarantee that you may not encounter a problem.
Each Vinyl silhouette can only be installed once. You can put them directly on the wall for a more lasting solution, on a canvas or most smooth surface. Make sure to read Vinyl Silhouettes tips on taking pictures for their custom made decals.

+ Full-body silhouette available 3 formats $48-$86

+ If you are tired to see the plastic toy boxes, the Toy Store will look better in the living room or the playroom. The three-level to box stand designed by Oeuf has removable bin dividers for easy storage of toys in any sizes. $496 in classic walnut or birch finish. Via Cool Mom Picks

+ I spot the Weck food storage jars when I visited Heath Ceramics in Los Angeles. I felt in love with these mini canisters. If I recalled well, they carry other sizes not shown on their Web site. Heath put some candies in a mini canister next to the cash to tempt me more. $3 for a mini canister with 2 clamps
+ Serve a coffee latte or a large hot chocolate to your brunch guests in these red Faience Café au Lait Bowls. The bowls are available in four patterns: circle, art nouveau, flowers and heart. The red color makes them an ideal candidate for Valentine’s Day breakfast. $18 each at P.O.S.H. in Chicago. Via Apartment Therapy Chicago
