When shopping for a baby shower gift, it can be hard to resist adorable onesies and teeny tiny footwear. And, if the Mom-to-be is a first-timer, baby essentials like blankets and diapers are practical though somewhat impersonal options.
If you’re looking for gift options with a little more longevity, we’ve collected ideas that are sure to please stylish parents-to-be and their stylish babies. Let’s start with baby basics.
Baby Comb and Brush Set
Stylish babies need equally stylish grooming tools. This modern set is cute and compact: bunny ears are actually a gentle brush and comb, while the base has a round, baby-safe mirror. Bonus: it’s BPA- and PVC-free.
Swaddle Blankets from Aden + Anais
There’s no shortage of beautiful baby blankets on the market, but these sweet swaddlers are practical too. Made of lightweight cotton muslin, the blankets are gentle on skin and allow a baby’s body to breathe. Check out this brand for other prints and organic options too.
Lifefactory Glass Baby Bottles
With so much worry about chemicals in plastic, when it comes to baby bottles, glass is the way to go. These non-toxic, colorful baby bottles from Lifefactory include a silicone sleeve and convert into cups when your child is ready.
Sophie the Giraffe Teething Toy
Though Sophie has been in production since 1961, in recent years the popular teething toy has re-emerged mostly due to it’s safe-for-baby materials. Sophie is made from 100% natural rubber and non-toxic paint to soothe baby’s gums while teething.
I bought several pouches from Oktak, the brand of Aki Takada, a Japanese bag designer who lives in Manhattan. Aki has launched an Etsy store for baby stuff called Oktak Mini. Like for her coin purses, pouches and clutches, her fabric choice is awesome.
The small and large bibs would make baby shower gift that parents will appreciate since you need a few ones.
On September 16th, 2010 (tomorrow), Bugaboo will launch its latest stroller at the Kind & Jugend Fair in Cologne, Germany. I am happy to share a sneak peak at Bugaboo Donkey. As you will see, the new stroller adds storage and is more versatile for young families. It’s particularly interesting for family of 2.
In three clicks, you can easily convert the Bugaboo Donkey from a full-sized mono stroller to a full-sized side by side duo stroller and back again to a mono stroller. In mono configuration the Bugaboo Donkey has the same width than the Bugaboo Cameleon. This is possible since the Cameleon fits a bassinet. Here, they move the position of the seat to fit an expandable side luggage basket. There is also storage under the seat.
For parents with two young children or twins, the Donkey converts into one of the narrowest duo strollers (72 cm in width). Unfortunately, you will have to wait until Spring 2011 to buy a Bugaboo Donkey in the USA, UK, Netherlands and Spain. Other countries will follow later.
I saw it in action on a private video and it seems pretty easy to convert. I am looking forward to see color pictures. Sept. 22nd Update: I added the video which is now public.
I bought a couple framed handbags from the New York designer oktak. I enjoy them. With the baby boom I see around me, I more inclined to show you cool baby goods that would be perfect for baby showers.
You can find an array of baby gears in an array of stunning fabrics. The octopus pink burp cloth is lovely. Diapers and feeding bottles of any size will fit comfortably inside the drawstring bags. You can recycle it as a beach bag or a shoe bag.
Mothers never have enough bibs. Her bibs are reversible. The large bibs fit babies over 6 months and toddlers. The small bibs fit newborns, up to 12 months.
She proposes modern, sophisticated patterns. The Babyburrito blankets have a comfy plush collar and are made of luxe minkie fabric on one side with designer cotton fabric on the other. I particularly like the Kyoto changing pad.
On the functional side, her changing pads roll in a slim fit. Parents have enough baby things to carry that you should look for gears that require less space to carry.
Lianne sells her products online and at selected retailers in Canada and in the United States. All Babyburrito products are handmade in Canada.
Women on Twitter
We went to an after-Geek Girl Dinner where we talked about social media. I am glad to report that we convinced one more mom to join Twitter. Josee of LilyEcolo, a fashionable, reusable shopping bags brand has joined us. If you are interested by what I have to say, follow me on Twitter.
Maman Bébé et Café acts a unique community destination for moms with young children. The place brings under the same roof a cafe, a supervised play area for kids, a studio for fitness and cultural classes, a mini-spa for parents and a baby product boutique. All the suppliers are from businesses started by moms.
It is good to know that the place is available for kids birthday parties. I am sorry that I forgot my camera so I cannot show you my own pictures.
Come To See Me in Toronto
There was a good turn out at the event. As I am putting the finishing touch to my PodCamp Toronto session scheduled for Saturday, February 21st, 2009 at 2:45 pm, it was great to chat with women operating mom-based businesses.
+ A friend of mine asked me this week if I talk about wines on my blog. I enjoy a good bottle of wine but I am not a sommelier. Seeing the list of 15 wines under $15 by The Nest, convinces me to share 3 of my favorite wines in that price range. From Spain, I suggest the Crianza Red Rioja by Marques de Caceres. We discovered the Rapitala Nero d’Avola last year; my husband Jerome and I enjoy this everyday wine from Sicily. For a white wine that you pair nicely with a lemon grilled chicken, try Les Jamelles from the South of France.
