Here is a flexible way to add a splash of color on your terrace. The new planting pots by Bacsac are ideal for an urban garden. Like their predecessors (the Bacsquare), these 100% recyclable, weightless and portable bags are easy to move outside on the balcony or in the garden. When not in use, the pots take little space since you can fold them. Continue Reading
Inspired by the Romotow concept, I continue my search for modern looking holiday home with a small footprint. Personally, I prefer a smaller place because it requires less maintenance. Since sleeping in a tent for several days in a row is not what I have in mind when I want to relax, I like to explore how small you can get to be comfortable as a family.
Romotow caught my eye for several reasons. First, it looks cool! Second, it is built around delivering spacious and convenient mobile living area in a compact box. Third, it is versatile. You could use a Romotow as a caravan for your vacation. The rest of the year it could become your backyard office. Companies could find many uses for a design like this at trade shows or outdoor events. Continue Reading
A quick look at my logo is all you need to understand why I share this amusing outdoor lamp. Available in a small format and an extra large format, Tulip lamp comes with or without a light. The small version is designed as a signal light or courtesy table lamp. I don’t care about the table version. What grabbed my attention is this row of illuminated 5-foot tall tulip lamps. Le Balconier, a newly opened store (mid-April 2013) in Montreal, fills a need in the market. It is hard for condo owners and urban residents to create an outdoor oasis due to the lack of furniture and outdoor accessories that would fit their balcony. This is where Le Balconier comes to their rescue. Continue Reading

I have a thing for clever use of space. And since space will only continue to be at premium, I feel that the future of the entire interior design industry passes by making better use of smaller spaces.
It is more common to show a double-duty room inside a home which is why I please to have found an example done in a backyard. It feels right to use sand instead of a stone floor around the fire pit at this property next to water. Young kids can play near their parents during the day, while the parents are comfortably relaxing in the Adirondack chairs.

Although we love the warmth of the sun, sometimes it is too much and we start looking for a shady area.
To enjoy a full day at the beach or to entertain friends a hot afternoon, you could built your own Bohemian beach tent, like this gorgeous one I saw on Apartment Therapy.

If you prefer to buy one, check out the nice Sombrilla by Hollie & Harrie. I do not know why the nicest patterns are exclusive models for Australia. It comes with everything including aluminum poles and a shoulder bag. I like the cheerful Love’n The Sun Orange.

My last suggestion is to make your own cloth canopy. The hardest thing would be how to hang it; that depends of your space. Supplies that you may need are a grommet kit to punch sturdy holes into your fabric, tent poles or bamboo sticks, stout cord, and sturdy pegs. Make sure that you invite 3 friends to help you with the canopy installation. Head to Martha Stewart for more details.
The signature pattern plant pots are available in small (orange), medium (grey) and large (green). A hand trowel and a garden fork complete the collection.
Squirrels should not be able to eat the material of these bird houses. I selected two glazed ceramic bird houses and three made of metal available in several colours. Except for the Piep Show XXL, which is designed to feed large group of birds, these bird houses should provide good protection for the birds that move to your backyard. The Piep Show XXL transforms into a bird bath if you place inside a big bowl of water.
I am not sure if Roost is still in production since I could not see it at Hepper’s Web site. If so, this would be sad since this is one of my favorite.
If you are a fan of Jonathan Alder’s Modernist Lantern bird house but you wish for one with a smaller price tag, the fluted birdhouse at Indigo can be your answer. The fluted birdhouse is definitely more rustic but it still looks good. Plus, I feel that the smaller hole would be safer for the bird family.
+ Fluted Birdhouse $39.50 CAD at Indigo
+ Piepshow Home designed by Sebastian Herkner for Radius Design EUR 59,90
+ Roost designed by Jed Crystal $69 USD at Generate Design
+ Lantern bird house by Jonathan Alder $128 USD
+ Piep Show XXL designed by Ralph Kraeuter for Radius Design EUR 149
Leave it to Umbra to give “pet paradise” a whole new meaning. Made from durable white ABS plastic, these smart designs are modern and sophisticated with their simple square shape and graphic cutouts.
It’s easy to imagine the bird cafe in an urban backyard, and what fish wouldn’t want to live a long life inside the fish condo? Chances are humans will love them too – they’d make a great gift option for the pet or animal lover in your life.
This year is the 20th edition of Festival International des Jardins at the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire in France. These special gardens are more vegetal art installation than a typical garden.
I noticed a common denominator on some of the photos of last year edition. They all have details suitable for entertaining. I thought that you might enjoy seeing them.
This teacup display could be something that you reproduce on a smaller scale for a tea party. It is pretty simple to build your own stand or to find a wall shelf unit at a store or at the flea market.
Birdy Place Card Holder Ideas
For a big outdoor event, you could transform basic wood bird houses into place card holders or to identify the tables.
