Custom designed paper goods like invitations are typically the first piece of an event puzzle. In addition to all the necessary details – like when and where – they also provide guests with the first taste of an event’s theme and formality. But, like most things custom, personalized printing often comes with a hefty price tag.
That’s why we loved this clever hand printing technique from Christine Schmidt, co-founder of the San Francisco-based design studio Yellow Owl Workshop.
With just a few supplies, including a blender pen, transparency sheets and access to a color photocopier, it’s easy to create your own customized invitations. This project works for any type of event and is a great way to boost your Thanksgiving dinner or Holiday party theme.
You’ll find instructions on the process from Sunset magazine – plus templates for placecards, an invitation and wrapping paper featuring these lovely vintage-looking fruit and veggie graphics.

I love Etsy but let’s face it, it is so huge now that it could be time-consuming to find what you are looking for. This is why we see an emergence of curated marketplaces. The latest addition is Wedzu, a marketplace for indie and handmade weddings. Some items would add fun to a baby shower, a birthday party or a club reunion.
I picked some of my favorite handmade items to make your party more memorable.
Photo shoots require props. The mustache and lips photo shoot has become a trend. The sexy red lips and bold English handlebar mustaches are available in sets of 2 or sets of 5. I featured before vintage silverware recycled as garden and herbs markers. Monkeys Always Look transformed them into wedding photo props. It comes in a set of 3 spoons with the words: I Love You, XOXO and Kiss Me.
Each cake favor box is tied by a pretty ribbon on the side. I also like it for baby and bridal showers.
If you ship your invite in a box, you might like to get one of these Please Deliver To Wooden Stamp to print on your shipping labels.
Funny Guest Book
The Dirty Laundry Guest Book Kit provides a creative twist. Guests can write their funny stories or wishes on note cards cut as t-shirts, tank tops, pants and skirts. The kit includes mini wooden clothespins, clothesline and a coordinating label that encourages guest’s to write notes to affix on a detergent bottle.

I do not know if you heard but there is a new iPhone app by Cartolina Cards that is cool and useful. The app enables you to send short digital notes embellished by the beautiful drawings of graphic designer Fiona Richards. She called them cartogram.
You select one of the gorgeous designs, write a brief message and then, you are ready to email or text it to a friend. The interface is easy to use. The app automatically syncs with your phone calendar. The best part is that if you wrote down the important birthday dates in your calendar, you will be automatic reminded of an upcoming birthday.
I bought it on the first day it was released. It was late at night so I sent a cute note to my adorable husband. It’s $2.99 well spent. Congratulations Fiona!

The Beautiful Project is the work of Jeannette, a red-hair Vancouver Web designer and graphic artist. She has a thing for vintage items. Sending a card should not be only on Holidays or for birthday. You can make an every day invite more personal by sending a note card to invite a friend for a chat in front a cup of coffee or tea.
She put her twist on the traditional Thank You cards and Birthday Cards. The Beautiful Project’s note cards can be found at selected retail stores, at goodEGG Industries and on Etsy. Most of her birthday cards are unisex. A few models are suitable for kids.
You save if you buy a bundle of 6 cards at $20. I do not know about you but I will order some.

+ Retro Inspired Birthday Card. Happy Birthday and Eat Lots of Cake notecard $4
You can sew anything. Here is a cool idea that I spot last year at the Souk @ Sat. When I bought a few bags of absolutely delicious caramels and cookies from Dînette Nationale, they put them in a brown bag. For decoration, they sewed a tag and a long wool string with a contrasting thread. It is simple. Yet, it looks so adorable!
Raplapla Dolls and Soft Animals
Dînette Nationale is a candy maker that distributed her products at the fabulous doll maker Raplapla in Montreal. They also produced a series of Raplapla animals for babies. All her dolls and animals can be washed in the machine and hang to dry. Raplapla dolls and cuddly toys respect Health Canada safety standards. I own this one; she is named Angele. You can buy them on Etsy.
+ Raplapla dolls $56 USD on Etsy

Decorating craft letters for a birthday party is an alternative or a complement to birthday banners. They can be used to label a station. Display them on a shelf, a buffet table or hang them from the ceiling.
I saw those at Paper Source yesterday. They glued a combination of decorative papers to create beautiful festive craft letters. They recommend PVA glue for this craft project. I love it!
+ Craft letters $3.75 each
+ PVA Glue $9.95
I love the idea of custom made gift bags to fit the occasion or the party theme. That would be awesome for a bridal shower, a baby shower and even for delivering unique swag bags.
Get inspired by the waxed paper gift bags shown by Etsy seller Karuku. You can find the wax paper bags, the handles, plenty of stamps and Japanese tapes at her Etsy shop. The finished products look feminine and sophisticated.
The shipping costs are quite affordable, which was a surprise since Karuku is located in Tokyo.
+ Square Wax Paper Bags $6.50 USD for pack of 10
+ Ink pads for Fabric, 6 Japanese colors $20.70 USD
+ Tape for stamp, 5 meter long, 20 mm wide $17.50

One way to save on your invites is to print your own. For better results, it’s best to use a local print shop, or an online printing service. A Printable Press keeps a list of good online printing shops on their site.

Fiona Richards is known for her unique style. I love what she does. Therefore, I am happy to introduce the new collection of Cartolina greeting cards and notebooks. I only selected a few. So make sure to check out her entire collection because it is exquisite.
This time, Fiona was definitely inspired by the fashion history of France. Her variation on Baroque fashion is splendid. It allows her to display burst of colors in a refined way. It is one of the rare occasions where I will suggest that you buy a kit.
More Florals and Nature Themes
If you wish to give a little something to a girl friend, you can match your card with a notebook. You could mix the White Swan notebook and the Blue Lotus notebook to create an ensemble.
It’s OK to think outside the box when you select a greeting card. For example, the Lucky You card could be used to wish Happy Birthday! to a kid or for a Baby Shower.
In case you did not know, Cartolina produces environmentally reponsible paper products. Their recycled paper cards are printed with vegetable based inks. Their printer was named Most Environmentally Progresive Printer in Canada for the last 5 years at the Environmental Printing Awards.

I wish all my readers to are moms, including my super mom and my mother-in-law, a wonderful time for Mother’s Day!
I learned a lot of things from my mother, who was a businesswoman at a time when married women were stay at home mothers. She taught me to follow my passion in what I do, to embrace life and that it is better to have tried to do something and failed than to do nothing. But most importantly, that we should not considered it a failure if we learned something. It is fair to say that I inherited my entrepreneur spirit from her. I love you, mom!
