DIY Christmas Decorations on Ribbons

diy christmas decorations on ribbons

Real Simple can teach you how to make your own ornament chandelier for this Holiday season. You build tiers with balls attached to ribbons of different lengths. Then, glue the ball together to affix your creation.

For the second project, you will need plenty of small ornaments. Real Simple used retro bell-shaped ornaments to create its columns of ornaments. You could use various decorated small balls instead. The 12 Days of Christmas Ornaments or the Dew Drop Ornaments mixed the Jingle Bell Ornaments provide more options.

DIY Thanksgiving Garland

DIY Thanksgiving Chain

DIY Thanksgiving Chain

With the hustle of the holidays already upon us, it can be a challenge to make time to reflect on what the season is all about. That’s why I loved this thoughtful idea and accompanying DIY project from Silverbox Studios.

These printable strips feature the phrase “I am thankful for…” in elegant type, with room to write what you’re grateful for. Use the strips as napkin rings, tags for tree branches or to make paper garland. The examples were printed on kraft paper, but you can coordinate with your decor or tabletop by printing on coloured card stock or decorative paper.

This is a wonderful activity for guests of all ages, especially if you’ll be celebrating American Thanksgiving.

If you are looking for inspirations to make your own centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table, have a look at what Jordan Ferney of Oh Happy Day did for the Wedding Project. It took her a few hours to make this 14 foot garland for $16. If you have the time, it is worth it since it creates such an impact on a simply dressed dining table.

Cardboard Christmas Trees

recycled cardboard christmas tree moderno

recycled cardboard christmas tree moderno

If you do not have the space or the time to make a traditional Christmas tree, you might look for simple and affordable alternatives. I spotted three Christmas trees online that are made with unconventional materials. Plus, they are reusable years after years.

recycled cardboard christmas trees

First, Cascades launched a recycled cardboard Christmas tree line. Available in three declinations, their height varies from 52 inches to 24 inches. My favorite model is the tallest one, Moderno in natural cardboard with printed decorations. It also comes in white or in a green version, that you or your kids can decorate.

Smaller Christmas trees

If you are looking for smaller trees, you will find at trees from 3 feet to 1 foot at the Cardboard Christmas Tree. They come with cardboard ornaments and a stand that you can use as is or paint.

Or you may prefer the more traditional style of the 24-inch TOTEM Xmas Tree available at Hip from Holland. It comes with angel, deer, peace doves, candles, decorations and a star to out at the top.

Matchbox Advent Calendars :: diy projects

I love seeing inanimate objects – like uninteresting matchboxes – transformed into delightful decorations with a bit of paper, ribbon and creativity.

Grouped together to create a one-of-a-kind advent calendar, the tiny “drawers” of matchboxes are perfect places to store chocolates, candies and toys. Any of these DIY options would be a perfect family craft activity leading up to the Christmas countdown.

White Winter Wonderland Theme for the Holiday Season

white wonderland ball ornaments

For its elegance and use of transparency, Winter White Wonderland is my favorite Christmas trend this year. It feels modern, fresh and would subtlety blend into your home decor. Most of all, it is fairly easy to achieve a stunning look because you have access to a vast collection of ornaments and props.

To create dimensions, make sure to play with materials and textures. Think about decorating with silver dust, light golden tones, white milk glass, bona china, snow-frost effects, pearls, beads, mirrors, fake fur, etc… Use any materials that enable you to achieve a sense of icy cold opulence.

Variations on the Theme

white transparent christmas trend

I do not believe that your Christmas decorations should look the same year after year. From a budget viewpoint, you will be pleased to know that every piece of this design could be reused for many themes. As you can see in this vignette done for an entry hallway, you can mix ordinary household items with Christmas decorations and achieve a festive look.

It is simple to turn this theme around. The style could feel as modern, casual or traditional as you like. If you aim for a natural look, add moss, pines, twigs and rocks. Or make it nostalgic and display old skate ornaments, sleds, birds, knitted mitts and sweaters like I did last year for my own Christmas tree.

DIY Advent Calendar from Julie Ree

paper pyramids :: DIY advent calendar by Julie Ree

Advent calendars are a fantastic way to celebrate the countdown to Christmas with a daily indulgence. Though typically inexpensive to buy, a little creativity goes a long way toward a charming advent calendar filled with treats for your family and guests to enjoy throughout December.

Small chocolates fit inside the paper pyramids for an advent calendar project

I’ve been planning to make this gorgeous advent garland created by Julie Ree for years. Paper pyramids – which Julie cleverly notes look like sculptural, modern trees – are printed, folded and filled with chocolates, candies or other special surprises. With 25 pyramids, there is a lot of cutting involved in this project, but the instructions are so simple you can ask kids to help. The result is worth it!

Print the pyramids on coloured or patterned cardstock to coordinate with your holiday decor. Julie tied her pyramids to a purchased mini apple garland, but you could also use a long piece of wide ribbon, branches in a vase or evergreen boughs.

Watch for more DIY advent calendar ideas in the coming weeks.

Colorful Sock Advent Calendar

baby sock advent calendar

baby sock advent calendar

This super sweet advent calendar idea from Martha Stewart puts odd-one-out socks to good use.

Decorate clean socks with number stickers or iron-on patches and use clothespins to attach them to a ribbon to give the effect of miniature stockings. For a touch of Dr. Seuss-style whimsy, choose brightly coloured the socks in a variety of sizes. Don’t forget to stash sweet treats and tiny toys inside for children to enjoy!

This project is an easy way to add a little festive flair to a child’s room, a railing or an otherwise neutral nook.
